Amazon is the Industrial Ring Leader of Solar

When it comes to saving our planet and turning our energy fully renewable, fingers are often first pointed at large industries and mega-corporations, with billionaire CEOs who are responsible for a vast majority of the world’s entire carbon footprint. Luckily, it seems they’re finally starting to listen, as Amazon announced on Tuesday that it is set to install solar panels on the roofs of ten U.K. fulfillment centers. Their plan overall is to have 20 megawatts (MW) installed, which will “generate the equivalent amount of electricity required to power over 4500 U.K. homes.”

Amazon’s carbon footprint.

It’s no secret that a company like Amazon, with a CEO like Jeff Bezos, is responsible for a huge amount of our carbon footprint impact as an entire planet. However, with the implementation of these new solar systems, they will be able to cut their carbon footprint by 6000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. As of 2016, Amazon still failed to disclose the exact amount of carbon emissions they produce each year, giving them an “F” grade from the CDP. Therefore, it is unsure how much this new plan is helping in the grand scheme. But it cannot be ignored what an important first step this is, even if they aren’t yet slapping panels on every building they own.

“As our fulfillment network continues to expand,” said Stefano Perego, Amazon’s U.K. operations director, “we want to help generate more renewable energy at both existing and new facilities around the world in partnership with community and business leader.” He continued, “By diversifying our energy portfolio, we can keep business costs low and pass along further savings to customers.”

Passing along savings to customers.

Perego is correct in his assessment that solar will save Amazon money in the long term, and because of this, there is no reason that all the fulfillment centers shouldn’t be jumping on board. After all, Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world, and he would easily be able to afford this daunting task.

Luckily, there is even more good news for the Amazon U.K. fulfillment centers, as Amazon also did sign a deal saying its U.K. buildings will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy. 100 is a hefty number and a challenging task, but this commitment to solar energy puts Amazon even more on the right path, at least in the United Kingdom.

We may not yet be where we need to be, especially after the scary UN analysis of climate change that came out recently. However, as we begin to come together to fight it, corporations like Amazon leading the charge is the important leadership we need in these scary times.
